Using a cordless electric lawn mower for your yard can be a great thing. If your lawn is less than a quarter of an acre, cordless electric lawn mowers can work well. This blog post mentions why this is the case. But, if you have a larger yard, it may not be worth the benefits. To that end, we’ll also discuss some of the drawbacks of electric mowers.

For this blog post, we’ll only be discussing cordless electric lawn mowers.

Pro: They are often simpler to maintain.
Typically, electric mowers have fewer mechanical parts than gas-powered ones, so there’s less to maintain–and less parts that could break. For instance, electric mowers often lack carburetors, mufflers, spark plugs, air filters, and other mechanical components.

Con: They are typically not as powerful as gas lawn mowers.
As of now, electric mowers tend to be half as powerful as gas-powered mowers.

Some electric mowers have lighter, less-robust blades than gas-powered mowers, so cutting through thick stuff can often be tough to do. Plus, prolonged exposure to lush areas can overheat the electric motor. And going over dense grass or leaves with electric mowers can drain their battery life. This means you may not be able to cut the entire yard without pausing to recharge it.

Pro: Electric mowers tend to be lighter.
Since electric mowers lack a fuel tank and combustion engine, along with all the associated mechanical parts, they are almost always lighter than gas-powered mowers. This typically makes them easier to store and maneuver.

Con: If you lose power, you can’t mow your lawn.
This may be an issue if you live in an area that is susceptible to days-long power outages due to extreme storms. Granted, maintaining a beautiful lawn may not be at the top of your list of things to do if you lost power for long periods of time. But it’s worth noting that the need for electricity to mow your lawn could be seen as a drawback.

Pro: Electric lawn mowers tend to be quieter.
This is especially helpful if you must mow your lawn early in the morning or you live in a very dense neighborhood. It’s also helpful if you have small kids who are napping while you mow.

Con: They typically can’t mow large yards.
You can buy riding electric lawn mowers that can mow one or more acres, but these tend to be expensive. If you don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on a mower–and you have an acre or more–you may want to stick with a cheaper, gas-powered mower.

Pro/Con: They tend to be more expensive upfront.
We’re including this as a pro and a con, because, over time, you can save in gas-mower maintenance costs by purchasing a more expensive electrical mower right now. For some, the upfront price won’t be worth it. But for others, saving money in the long-run might temper any hesitation about the initial expense.

Pro: You don’t have to refill it with gas.
Being able to avoid the hassle of constantly refilling your lawn mower might be worth the price of admission for some. And certainly not having to breathe in gas that your mower spews is a major pro for going electric.

Con: You need to wait for the battery to charge (or buy another expensive battery).
The typical battery life of an electric mower can be really frustrating–especially if you only have one. Charging a single batter can take hours, though there are speedier solutions for faster battery charges.
